The fragrant pansy is an old European forest plant, valued since antiquity for its strong aroma and early flowering. It grows naturally in shady, moist places.
Pansies were grown in monastery gardens as fragrant and symbolic plants.
In manor gardens, they were planted in shady places, along paths or under trees, where the scent could spread throughout the environment.
Pansies were very popular in rural homes and often grew near houses or paths.
Today, fragrant pansy remains a classic spring nursery plant.
