Phlox is a North American woodland plant that grows naturally in shady, moist areas. It forms low mats and blooms with soft blue or purple flowers.
In manor gardens, phlox was used as a plant for arbors, filling shady spots between shrubs.
In rural homesteads, it is sometimes grown in the shade of houses or on the edges of nurseries where there is little sun.
In urban areas, it is used in shady areas of parks as an early spring color accent.
Today it is one of the most important perennial carpet plants for arbors.
