Roof turnip is one of the oldest roof plants in Europe, originating from mountainous regions. It is able to store water in its leaves and survive in completely dry conditions, which is why it has naturally adapted to stone roofs and walls.

In manor and village architecture, turnip was considered a protective plant, planted on thatched or shingle roofs. It symbolized protection against lightning and evil spirits.

In homesteads, it often grew on roofs or stone structures, where it spread spontaneously and formed dense carpets.

Today it is used in decorative flower beds for dry areas and minimalist landscaping.
