The slender primrose is a plant of European meadows and forest edges, growing naturally in light, drier soils. It was early introduced into naturalistic gardens due to its elegant white flowers.
In manor parks, primroses are planted as a spring carpet plant, filling the spaces between shrubs and trees.
It was less common in rural nurseries, but was valued for its natural appearance and ability to spread.
Today it is often used in natural flower beds, where the effect of a wild meadow is sought.
