The Virginia aster is a plant native to North America that was introduced to Europe as a late-flowering ornamental. It is distinguished by its abundant purple or pink flowers that bloom in autumn, when most other plants have already finished growing.

In manor gardens, asters were important late-season flowerbed plants, providing color in early autumn.

In rural homesteads, they were often grown near fences or at the back of nurseries due to their tall growth and long flowering.

In urban areas, they are used in parks and public flower beds as autumn ornamental plants.

Today, virginian asters remain one of the most important autumn perennial flowers.
